Shrimp exports see gradual fall

Shrimp exports from Bangladesh have been showing a downtrend since 2011-12 fiscal, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque told Parliament on Tuesday.

Responding to a tabled question from Samshul Huq Chowdhury (Chittagong-12), he said Dhaka exported 48,010 tonnes of shrimp worth US$462.90 million in fiscal 2011-12, reports UNB. He said the exports volume was 50,330 tonnes worth US$434.24 million in fiscal 2012-13, while 47,640 tonne worth USD530.57 million in fiscal 2013-14.

The minister noted that Bangladesh shipped 44,280 tonnes of shrimp fetching US$506.12 million in 2014-15 while 80,730 tonnes worth US$459.01 million in 2015-16.

Replying to a question from M Abul Kalam (Natore-1), Muhammed Sayedul Hoque said hide production in the last three years had increased by 13.16 per cent.

He said hide production was 15,025,051 pieces in fiscal 2013-14 while 15,594,602 pieces in 2014-15 and 17,003,407 pieces in 2015-16.
