FDI in food sector drops sharply in last calendar year

Net inflow of the foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country’s food sector declined sharply in the past calendar year.

Bangladesh Bank statistics, released recently, showed that net FDI in food stood at $86.51 million in 2016 which was $125.15 million in 2015.

Central bank statistics also revealed that multinational entities based in the United Kingdom alone invested $52 million in the food industry of Bangladesh.

The official statistics also showed that net FDI in food industry was only $23 million in 2011 which jumped to $74.55 million in 2012. It later declined to $40.13 million in 2013 and increased to $59.82 million in 2014.
