One among six arrested militants conduct Tarabi prayers: police

One of the six suspected neo-JMB member, arrested in Dhaka’s New Market area on Sunday night, was conducting Tarabi prayers at a mosque, said police.

Members of the militant group had been gathering at the mosque under cover of prayers and were planning to kill an Islamic cleric, counter-terrorism Chief Monirul Islam said.

The detainees have been identified as Zahidul Islam aka Zoha aka Mashruf, 23, Abu Bakr Siddique aka Abu Mohammad, 19, Mohammadullah Adnan, 19, Mehedi Hassan Emon aka Abu Hamza, 21, Khaled Saifullah aka Abu Musab, 19, and Shamsuddin al Amin aka Abu Ahmed.

Police have confiscated mobile phones, notebooks, extremist propaganda, USB flash drives and memory cards from the detainees, said Monirul.

“The detainee Adnan led Tarabi prayers at the mosque. This way they could meet there every day.”

There are currently five council members on the JMB central committee, police said. One of the members is Sohel Mahfuz. Another leader has been identified as Sadi aka Abu Jandal aka Abu Darda aka Abu, who was providing weapons and other forms of assistance to the six detainees.

“After questioning the suspects we learned that Zahidul and Abu Mohammad were scouting the home of an Islamic cleric to plan his murder,” said Monirul.

The counter-terrorism official declined to name the cleric for his safety, saying that militants will try to kill those who speak out against them.

Militant organisations have called for attacks on the anniversary of the Gulshan Holey Artisan attack last year, he said.

But the continued efforts of law-enforcement agencies have weakened them and disrupted their efforts, he claimed.

“They have been unable to find new recruits. They want to raise morale and display their strength through an attack.”
