Trump signs $110b arms deal with KSA

The US and Saudi Arabia have reached a $110 billion-plus arms deal, significantly expanding the longstanding security relationship between the two countries, the White House said.

Hours after landing in Riyadh, the president's first stop on his foreign trip, Donald Trump and Saudi King Salman signed a series of agreements that include a military sales agreement of about $110 billion, effective immediately, plus another $350 billion over the next decade, reports The Independent.

The White House said this package of defence equipment and services supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia in the face of Iranian threats.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are currently conducting a military campaign in neighbouring Yemen against Houthis, a rebel group believed to be financially and militarily supported by Iran.

The deal will also improve Saudi Arabia's ability to fight terrorism in the Gulf region, reducing the burden on the US military to conduct those kind of operations, the White House said.

The US has been the main supplier for most Saudi military needs, from F-15 fighter jets to command and control systems worth tens of billions of dollars in recent years. Trump has vowed to stimulate the US economy by boosting manufacturing jobs.
