Though overall domestic consumption is estimated to increase, ratio of consumption to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has declined in the current fiscal year (FY17). 

Value of domestic consumption reached at Tk 1.44 trillion this year as against Tk 1.30 trillion in the past fiscal year, according to provisional estimation by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) last week. 

That means overall consumption expenditure increased by 10.76 per cent during the same period under review. 

Simultaneously, ratio of consumption to GDP is estimated to decline at 73.94 per cent this year from 75.02 per cent in the past fiscal year.

The provisional estimation of the national accounts shows that private consumption reached at Tk 1.32 trillion from Tk 1.20 trillion in this year. 

On the other hand, general government consumption also rose to Tk 0.12 trillion from Tk 0.10 trillion during the corresponding period under review.

In addition, on proportion to GDP, private consumption has declined to 67.55 per cent in the current fiscal year from 69.13 per cent in the past year. 

At the same time, ratio of general government consumption to GDP has increased to 6.39 per cent from 5.89 per cent during the period under review.
