CHITTAGONG, May 18: Cargo handling in the Chittagong Port jetties is being disrupted due to frequent disorder of container handling equipment.

This has slowed down unloading of imported raw materials including those of the readymade garment (RMG) sector.

The private berth operators, engaged in the specialised container terminals in the Chittagong port, opined that frequent minor disorder of the cargo handling equipment of the port causes delay in unloading the imported cargo despite their earnest efforts to speed up the pace of handling.

Representatives of businesses said, frequent disorder is very discouraging amid shortage of container handling equipment from which the prime port of the country has been suffering for years.

Sources said unloading of FCL (full container load) containers has been slowed down drastically and currently about 750 FCL containers are awaiting in the yards.

BGMEA director and vice president of the Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CMCCI) AM Mahbub Chowdhury said the FCL containers awaiting un-stuffing are mostly containers that have brought raw materials of the RMG industry.

"The pace of slow unloading of RMG raw materials is a matter of concern for the industry since we have to count every moment as important to avail shipment schedule fixed up by buyers abroad. So slow pace in handling has become injurious," he said.

He said MV MCC Nanjing anchored in the port jetty with 172 FCL containers on May 08 started unloading cargo from May 14. But the operators will take another week to complete the work.

Another vessel with FCL cargo anchored at the jetty on May 03 started un-stuffing after five days. This vessel will take another two days to complete unloading.

Yet another vessel with FCL containers anchored on May 07 started unloading May 10. The operators will take one more week to complete the work.

An official at the Saif Powertec engaged in the cargo handling in the New Mooring Container Terminal and Chittagong Container Terminal said they are trying their best to complete unloading in right earnest but frequent disorder of equipment of the port causes hindrance.

Shortage of storage facilities for the FCL containers also delays completion of works in expected time.

Eleven vessels with containers were waiting in jetties while 14 in the outer anchorage until Wednesday, sources said.
