DNCC opens holiday mkt for women



The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) launched on Thursday a separate holiday market for women in the vacant space of its yet-to-be-operational Mohakhali kitchen market in the city. Around 50 women entrepreneurs will be allowed to usually operate their businesses in the market every Friday and Saturday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  But they will be able to operate their business all day long in the month of Ramadan. The women entrepreneurs will not have to pay any fees to the city corporation for doing business in the holiday market. Home Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the market while DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq, DNCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mesbahul Islam, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md Mizanur Rahman Joarder, Ward-20 Councilor Md Nasir, Reserved women's seat (ward- 31, 33 and 34) councilor Aleya Sarwar Daisy, and president of For the Women Shamsun Nahar were present at the programme. Speaking at the programme, DNCC Mayor said the city was examining the potential of setting up holiday markets for women entrepreneurs in every ward. He said there would be a separate holiday market in the city soon only for the persons with disabilities. Mr Huq also said that the DNCC will take an initiative to introduce a loan scheme for poor rickshaw-pullers of Gulshan and Banani area as part of their rehabilitating. Delivering his speech, Home Minister said law enforcement agencies would provide adequate support to the women entrepreneurs for safe and uninterrupted business. Talking about recent Banani rape incident, he said all the Banani rape accused would be brought to justice no matter how powerful they were. He also said the relevant authority would take action against the Rain Tree Hotel, where the rape incident took place, if any instance of negligence was found.
