PM to begin Saudi Arabia tour on May 20

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to fly to Saudi Arabia on May 20 at the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The Prime Minister will attend the Arab Islamic American Summit during the visit in the kingdom from May 20 to 23.

Hasina will promote Bangladesh’s stance against militancy and extremism, Foreign Affairs Minister AH Mahmood Ali said at a media briefing on Thursday, reports bdnews24.com.

“The visit is expected to boost the bilateral relations,” he said.

“The Prime Minister will present her observations on what can be done jointly from an international platform to overcome militancy,” Ali said.

Talking about the alliance to fight terrorism under the leadership of Saudi Arabia, the minister said, “It is called Global Centre for Combating Extremist Thoughts. It is still developing and cannot be called an alliance yet.”

“Bangladesh will initially help research work for the platform. We will send soldiers if Makkah or Madinah, which is close to people’s heart, comes under threat,” said the minister.

Earlier, Saudi Culture and Information Minister Awwad bin Saleh Al-Awwad came to Dhaka on May 9 and handed over the invitation letter to the Prime Minister.

US President Donald Trump will also join the summit scheduled for May 21. This is his maiden foreign tour as the president of the United States.
