Global advocacy demands improved labour conditions in Bangladesh

FE Report

A global alliance styled Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) Wednesday called upon the European Union (EU) and other stakeholders to put pressure on the Bangladesh government for improving labour conditions.

"The EU should push for workers' rights and freedom of association in Bangladesh," it said ahead of the third annual review of the Sustainability Compact between Bangladesh government, the EU and the International Labour Organisation in Dhaka.

It also called upon clothing brands and other national governments to maintain pressure on the Bangladesh government to improve labour conditions and comply with the Compact's demands.

The Sustainability Compact was signed in the aftermath of the deadly Rana Plaza collapse of 2013 when the need for change in the garment industry was made painfully clear, said the statement of the CCC.

The Compact outlined concrete actions that the government should take to strengthen workers' rights.

The CCC is a global alliance dedicated to improving working conditions and empowering workers in the global garment and sportswear industries.

Since 1989, the CCC has been working to ensure the fundamental rights of workers are respected.

It brings together trade unions and NGOs covering a broad spectrum of perspectives and interests, such as women's rights, consumer advocacy and poverty reduction.
