Farmworkers’ wage rates inch up slightly

Workers involved in the agriculture showed marginal enhancement of their wages in March this year compare to the month of February, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

It showed that Wage Rate Index of Agriculture stood at 143.56 points in March, 2017 which was 143.21 points in February this year.  Thus monthly wage index increased by around 0.24 per cent during the period under review.

On year-on-year basis, farm wage rate index, however, increased by 6.94 per cent reflecting better increment of wage during a year.

Nevertheless, the real increase in farm wage annually is quite lower when adjusted with the rate of inflation.

BBS data showed that annual average inflation rate stood at 5.39 per cent during the last 12 months ended on March this year.

Thus real wage rate index may be estimated at 1.55 points during the period under review.
