Zakat fair begins in port city Friday

Our Correspondent

CHITTAGONG, May 16: A two-day Zakat fair, the fifth of its kind in the port city, is scheduled to be held on May 19 and 20 at the Chittagong Club.

Organisers said this Monday while speaking at a press conference at the Seniors Club in the city ahead of the fair.

Dr Mahbubur Rahman, member secretary, the Zakat Fair Organising Committee of the Centre for Zakat Management (CZM), said the amount of Zakat, if calculated and paid properly in the country, will be as much as Tk 600 billion (Tk 60,000 crores) a year.

While detailing, he quoted a Bangladeshi professor living in the USA as saying after his research five to six years ago that the country's Zakat fund would be around Tk 300 billion a year if it's properly calculated and paid.

That amount, according to him, will be double now in terms of growth of the country's economy.

He, however, said that he didn't conduct any research work on it.

Zakat can play the role of a catalyst to help strengthen the power of Muslims and remove poverty from a Muslim country like Bangladesh, he observed and thereby invited the eminent and affluent people to visit the fair.

CZM is organising the Zakat fair for the fifth time here with the theme 'Making a difference with Zakat' for accelerating the social and economic security.

Like before, the aim of this year's Zakat fair is to discover Zakat as a big asset, to make people conscious about its importance, significance and rules of Zakat, to help people calculate the amount of personal Zakat as well as business Zakat and to show some examples where Zakat has changed the lives of poor people.

The fair will be inaugurated in the morning on May 19 while a question-answer session will be held for women on the same day at 3:00pm.

On the second day, a seminar on 'Role of Zakat in Social Security and Poverty Reduction' will be held in the morning where former secretary of the government Md Ayub Miah will be the keynote speaker.

Another round table conference will be held on 'A New Frontier for economic empowerment, a case study of CZM's Jeebika Mohra Project'. The main speaker on this topic will be former adviser to the caretaker government and chairman of the PPRC Dr Hussain Zilliur Rahman.

Organisers said products of Zakat beneficiaries, women garments, gift items and books on Zakat will be displayed in the fair.            pankajdastider@gmail.com
