Marginal growers expect bumper Jhinga output in Rajshahi division

BOGRA, May 16: Thousands of poor and marginal peasants of eight districts under Rajshahi division are expecting a bumper yield of ridge gourd (Jhinga) this season.   

According to sources of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), farmers in Bogra, Joypurhat, Pabna, Sirajganj, Naogaon, Natore, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts have brought around 9,000 hectares of land under the farming of ridge gourd.

Timely supply of necessary agri-input from the DAE helps get the desire output, DAE added.

Farmer Solaiman Ali of Pushinda village under Adamdighi upazila in Bogra said he was growing the vegetable in 30 decimals of land. Per maund of the vegetable is being sold at Tk 1,600 to Tk 1,800 in the local kitchen markets.

"I have brought over 0.33 acre of land under Jhinga cultivation this season spending Tk 8,000. I am expecting to make a profit of Tk 28,000 if the weather condition remains favourable till the last harvesting day", said farmer Raisul Alam of Pachbibi upazila in Joypurhat.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, Bogra, Faridur Rahman said the farmers of the region have shown more interest to bring new crop lands under Jhinga cultivation due to high demand and good market rate.
