DNCC to spend Tk 10b on city development next FY

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is set to spend around Tk. 10 billion during the next fiscal year (FY) for construction of roads, drains and footpaths in areas under its control, Mayor Annisul Huq said.

"During the last fiscal, we spent around Tk. 3.1 billion for construction of 180 kilometres of road, 168 kilometres of drain and 65 kilometres of footpath", he said during a press meet organised on the occasion of his two years in office.

"During the ongoing fiscal, we have initiated schemes to build 372 kilometres of road, 300 kilometres of drain and 157.6 kilometres of footpath the total cost of which will be Tk. 8 billion", he added.

"However, during the next fiscal year, our total spending for such construction works will reach Tk. 10 billion", the DNCC Mayor said.

Focusing on his initiatives to make the city cleaner, Mr Annisul said around 20 thousand billboards as well as 175 thousand illegal banners and festoons were removed in the last few months.

"In addition, around 168 kilometres of drain have been cleaned during the ongoing fiscal which was not cleaned in the last 29 years", the DNCC Mayor said.

"At the same time, a total of 52 Secondary Transfer Stations have been constructed for waste disposal while cleaning and waste management jobs of eight wards have already been privatised", he added.     

The DNCC has built a graveyard, the largest in South Asia, at Rayer Bazar area at a cost of Tk. 5.22 billion, he said. The total area of the graveyard is 96.23 acres.

"Lately, a 45-metre long bridge has been constructed at the Goidartek area of Gabtoli at a cost of Tk. 100 million", Mr Annisul said.    

The Mayor also informed the newsmen that the DNCC has bought a total of 200 hand spray machines, 110 fogger machines, 10 wheel barrow machines and a vehicle mounted fogger machines to repel mosquitoes.

He also said a mobile app called Nagar has been developed recently through which citizens can avail various digital services within the city.

Established in November 2011 following split of former Dhaka City Corporation, the DNCC is currently composed of 54 wards. The total area is 196.228 square kilometre and the total population is around 10.6 million.
