BPC bags bids for import of million-tonne oils

FE Report

Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is receiving bids from suppliers to import diesel, jet fuel and furnace oil during July-December 2017 to meet huge fuel demand.

Officials said the BPC intended to import 680,000-860,000 tonnes of diesel, 100,000 tonnes of jet fuel and 80,000-100,000 tonnes of furnace oil to cater the domestic needs.

The petroleum import is being made from suppliers under three groups - Group A, Group B and Group C.

Under Group A, a selected international oil supplier would provide up to 430,000 tonnes of diesel and 50,000 tonnes of jet fuel, of which 240,000-330,000 tonnes of diesel should be supplied in a full cargo and 100,000 tonnes of diesel and 50,000 tonnes of jet fuel in a combination cargo.

Under Group-B category the selected international oil supplier would provide similarly up to 430,000 tonnes of diesel and 50,000 tonnes of jet fuel. Of the amounts, 240,000-330,000 tonnes of diesel should be supplied in a full cargo and 100,000 tonnes of diesel and 50,000 tonnes of jet fuel in a combination cargo.

For group C, the selected supplier would supply 80,000-100,000 tonnes of furnace oil.

A full cargo means it would carry 30,000 tonnes of petroleum products.

"The oil suppliers can submit bids either for any of the three, two or all of the groups," said one official about the procedure prescribed in the import tender.

This is BPC's third tender to import refined petroleum products through open tendering since February 2016.

The state-owned petroleum corporation is currently importing around 1.175 million tonnes of diesel, jet fuel and furnace oil combined under its second open tendering system during the first half of 2017.

Unipec Singapore Pte has been supplying around 965,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh for the January-June 2017 period.

The government has a decision to source 50 per cent of its total refined petroleum fuels from the international market through open tendering and the remaining half through government-to- government negotiation with state-owned international oil suppliers in 2017.

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) is the major term supplier of refined petroleum products to Bangladesh.

BPC has estimated to import around 4.0 million tonnes of refined petroleum products in 2017, which include diesel, jet fuel, furnace oil and octane.
