BOGRA, May 15: Thousands of banana growers of eight districts in Rajshahi division are making good profit this season due to fair market prices and high demand.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said over 15,000 farmers of the division are involved in banana farming. Every year farmers bring more lands under the cultivation of the popular fruit.

Repeated bumper production with lucrative market rate has been encouraging the growers to cultivate the tasty fruit in more lands, the sources added.

More than 0.8 million tonnes of banana is being produced from orchards and homesteads of the division every year, said Ansar Ali, former head of Botany Department at Government Azizul Haque College, Bogra. He said a good number of private organisations are playing an important role in expanding banana cultivation in Bogra, Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Rajshahi and Sirajganj.

"I have brought over 0.80 acre of land under banana cultivation last year spending Tk 40,000", said farmer Mizanur Rahman under Shibganj upazila of Bogra. He also said, "I have already sold 50 maunds of the fruit making a profit of Tk 80,000."

Trader Dulal Hossain said absence of suitable marketplaces for trading banana is one of the main problems in the area. Growers have to pile up the fruit at different points on the both sides of highways and sell those to the wholesalers.
