RANGPUR, May 15: Sand lifting from Jamuneshwari river in different areas of Balua Mashimpur and Milonpur unions under Mithapukur upazila of the district is going on unabated. For this, river bank, nearby croplands and other establishments are in risk to be perished.

Sources alleged that a section of local influential sand traders are involved in this callous act in collusion with some dishonest government officials.

Locals complained that the unscrupulous sand traders have continued lifting of sand illegally from the riverbed installing shallow machines intensifying the threat of erosion in the areas and also posing serious threat to river bank.

During a recent visit to some of the areas this correspondent found some shallow machines lifting sand from riverbed. Then the extracted sand was being taken to different areas by a number of tractor trolleys.

Mofa Mia, a local farmer of Tarofshadi village of Milonpur union said his eight decimals of land have already gone under the river owing to mindless sand lifting from the river. Like him a number of farmers complained that they have already lost 15 to 20 per cent of their croplands due to erosion caused by sand lifting.

Locals also alleged they lodged complaint with the concerned authority in this regard but no step has so far been taken, they further alleged.

In this situation the local people urged the concerned authorities to take immediate measures to stop sand lifting from the river and save heir croplands.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), Masuma Arefin said they have already given the list of the sand lifters to the police and they will take necessary steps in this regard.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mamun-ur-Rashid said he has been informed of the matter. Adequate measures will be taken soon to stop lifting of sand from the river in the areas. They will also take stern action against the culprits who are involved in such illegal activities, he added.
