Magura litchi farmers see Tk 200m profit this season

MAGURA, May 15: Magura litchi growers are expecting a profit of Tk 200 million this season as they achieved a bumper production of the summer delicacy.

Newly-harvested litchis have started appearing in the local markets. A bundle of 100 litchis is being sold at Tk 250.

DAE sources said the juicy fruit was grown in about 2500 orchards in district. Cultivators of the district have been farming litchi for about 10 years. Isakhada, Alamkhali, Hazrapur, Raghobdair, Kanchanpur, Alaipur Rautara and Ramnagar are the main litchi producing areas.

Magura DAE official Abdur Rashid said litchi brings solvency to numbers of families. About 10,000 people are directly and indirectly depend on litchi cultivation for living.

Anishur Rahman, a farmer of Alaipur village under Sadar upazila, said he has brought four bighas of land under the farming of litchi this season. He expects to make a profit of Tk 0.5 million.

Tilam Hossen, a trader in Parla area of the district town, said litchis worth Tk 1.5 million to 1.6 million are being sent to different parts across the country from the district every season.
