Govt, civil society urged to work for global migration compact

The government and the civil society should work together for preparing the UN Global Compact on Migration and Refugees, experts said at a seminar on Saturday.

The seminar, held at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka, was organised by some non-government organisations including COAST and EquityBD from Bangladesh, Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) from Switzerland and Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

Speakers said the UN General Assembly in 2016 adopted a resolution to prepare Global Compact on Migration and Refugees by the middle of 2018. In this regard consultations at international and regional levels have already been planned, they mentioned.

Addressing the programme, Foreign Secretary Sahidul Haque said civil society and government need to work together for next two years to influence the global compacts process.

Dr. Atiq Rahaman of BCAS suggested that MoFA coordinate with civil society to have effective dialogue while Abdusattar of IoM said that climate displaced people should be termed as "environmental migrants".

Sayed Aminul Haque from COAST presented the key note paper of the seminar, moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD.
