Zinc-enriched paddy variety gains popularity

Newly innovated Zinc-enriched Brridhan-63 has appeared to have earned farmers confidence in this northwestern Barind tract because of its quicker and increased yield. Increased yields in short duration this year encouraged more to cultivate the variety,

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute’s (BRRI) chief scientific officer Dr Rafiqul Islam told a farmers' motivational meeting at Paba Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

He said BRRI innovated Brridhan-63 is a short duration rice variety which can be harvested 100 days after plantation and this variety may yield as high as 6 tonnes per hectare if nurtured properly.

It’s a short duration rice variety cultivable in irri-boro season and to be harvested 100 days after plantation.

Each kilogram of rice of BRRI-63 contained 19 mg of zinc and 9 percent of protein which could ensure high nutrition and play a significant role in prevention different diseases including that of renal ones, diarrhea, and stunting and pneumonia-induced childhood deaths.

This variety may open up a door of enormous prospects of mitigating zinc and protein deficiency besides fighting diarrhea and pneumonia-induced childhood deaths and stunting, he said. Zinc, iron and vitamin-A are three most vital micronutrients, the deficiency of which hampers children's natural growth and affect their immunity.

Statistics suggests over 40 percent children below five years of age in Bangladesh are stunted while an estimated 44 percent children of the same age group are at risk of zinc deficiency.

More than 150 male and female farmers joined the meeting staged by BRRI's regional office with support of its 'Physical Facilities and Research Activities Promotion Programme'. source – BSS
