Asian shares slip on US political uncertainty

Asian shares mostly lower
Asian stock markets were mostly lower Friday as investors remained cautious amid US political uncertainty. Weak US retail data added to worry over consumer spending.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 0.7 per cent to 19,823.28 and South Korea's Kospi fell 0.4 per cent to 2,288.39. Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged 0.1 per cent higher to 25,141.13.

The Shanghai Composite Index in mainland China was 0.4 per cent higher at 3,072.01. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.7 per cent to 5,836.90.

Major US benchmarks finished modestly lower. The S&P 500 index fell 0.2 per cent to 2,394.44. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.1 per cent to 20,919.42. 

The Nasdaq composite declined 0.2 per cent to 6,115.96.

Benchmark US crude oil futures extended gains, rising 7 cents to $47.90 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. 

The contract rose 50 cents, or 1.1 per cent, to settle at $47.83 per barrel Thursday. Brent crude, the international standard, added 6 cents to $50.83 per barrel in London.

The dollar weakened to 113.70 yen from 113.86 yen in late Thursday trading. The euro strengthened to $1.0874 from $1.0862, according to AP.
