Around six per cent of the aid funds of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) came to Bangladesh in the past year.

The latest annual report of the Manila-based regional development bank also showed that Bangladesh became the sixth largest recipient of the ADB’s ordinary capital resources and development funds. 

In 2016, ADB approved $17.47 billion as loans and grants for its member countries. Of this, the pie of Bangladesh stood at around $1.05 billion.    

India received highest amount of aid funds from ADB which was 17 per cent or around $3 billion in 2016. 

China became the second largest recipient of the aid (12 per cent) followed by Azerbaijan (10 per cent), Indonesia (10 per cent) and Pakistan (7 per cent). 

In the past year, ADB’s total operation stood at a record $31.70 billion, up by 18 per cent from the previous year.

Beside $17.47 billion loans and grants, some $14.06 billion was channelled as co-financing while the rest $169 million as technical assistance. 

 As of December 31, 2016, ADB’s cumulative lending to Bangladesh stood at $18.3 billion for 269 loans, $252.4 million for 422 technical assistance projects, and $787.10 million for 35 grants project. 

Moreover, as of March 31, 2017, ADB’s projects under implementation for Bangladesh comprised 90 loans and grants packages amounting to $7.6 billion and 32 technical assistance projects amounting at $28.58 million.
