Customs intelligence suggests prosecution of ex-UNDP chief
Bangladesh’s customs intelligence agency has recommended prosecution of former UNDP chief Stefan Priesner for abusing his duty-free car import privileges, according to

The investigation report and the recommendation by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate were sent to the National Board of Revenue on Thursday, said CIID Director General Moinul Khan.

Khan said Priesner, who served as the UNDP chief in Dhaka between 2008 and 2012, sold the SUV brought under the duty-free facilities to a businessman, Tareque Hasan, without completing the tariff-related formalities.

Customs officials seized the car from a house in Uttara on Dec 28.

“The car was sold through a foreign bank for personal gain, which is a case of money laundering,” said Khan. “The report recommends that this incident be considered a punishable offence under customs law and the money laundering prevention law.”

Two notices were sent to Priesner as part of the investigation asking him to appear, but the UNDP official, currently posted in Uzbekistan, said he was unable to come to Bangladesh.

The customs intelligence agency has also recommended that a notice of the allegations be sent to the UNDP headquarters in New York, said Khan.

“The report advised the UNDP to take disciplinary and legal action against Priesner according to its own internal guidelines.”
