The government has directed the district administrations to strengthen their monitoring to ensure smooth supply of essential commodities in the upcoming Ramadan.
The deputy commissioners have also been asked to put forward their recommendations to the government if they face any problems while handling the matter.
The ministry of commerce held two meetings recently and asked the DCs to remain vigilant and take steps for keeping the prices of essential commodities stable during the month of fasting.
The ministry has also urged them to facilitate smooth supply of perishable during Ramadan, officials said.
They DCs were asked to send recommendations within two weeks, which can help keep the prices of essential commodities stable.
The demand for perishable goods such as onion, cucumber, green chilli, mangoes, dates, carrots, and chickpeas usually go up during Ramadan.
Due to traffic jams, goods-laden trucks or vehicles sometimes cannot reach the capital on time, leaving green vegetables to perish.
"We are conscious about the issue. We will take all steps for keeping the prices of essential commodities under control during Raman considering consumers' interests," additional secretary of the Commerce Ministry Pranesh Ranjan Sutradhar told the FE.
