Court orders arrest of Comilla mayor-elect Sakku
A Dhaka court has ordered the arrest of Comilla mayor-elect Monirul Haque Sakku on charges brought by the Anti Corruption Commission.
The BNP leader, who has been elected for second term in the polls held last month, stands accused of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and hiding asset details, reports bdnews24.com.
On Tuesday, a senior special judge's court issued the warrant after taking the cognizance of the ACC chargesheet. It also ordered confiscation of all assets of Sakku.
The court, however, dropped charges brought against Sakku's wife Afroza Jesmin, ACC counsel Mosharraf Hossain told the bdnews24.com.
He said the court has instructed police file an update over the arrest and seizure of assets on May 9.
In 2008, the ACC filed the case with the Ramna police in Dhaka and charges were pressed against Sakku and his wife in February last year.
The BNP leader is accused of having assets worth Tk 45.77 million beyond his known sources of income and hiding details of assets worth Tk 11.24 million.
The ACC case named Sakku's wife, but the graft watchdog did not press any charges against her.
