FM for Chittagong, St Petersburg to be sister cities
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali met the St. Petersburg governor and proposed to make Chittagong a 'sister city' with the Russian port city, reports bdnews24.com.
He visited the city on Saturday after the bilateral talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in a statement.
While meeting Governor of Leningrad Oblast (St Petersburg) Alexander Drozdenko, Ali cited the historic value of St. Petersburg's architectural beauty and its role as a major port city of Russia and proposed the partnership with Bangladesh's port city.
The Governor earlier briefed Ali about the historic importance of the capital of the region: St. Petersburg, a city built by Czar Peter the Great.
He highlighted the growing economic importance of St. Petersburg as the trade and transit hub of the eastern and western parts of the entire Europe.
Regarding trade, Ali said that Bangladeshi export items like pharmaceuticals, ocean going vessels, leather goods, tea, especially organic tea, potato and fragrant rice are quite popular in different European countries and foresees good potential for them in Russia as well.
The two sides also discussed possibility of joint venture in ship building industry for production of medium sized vessels and fishing trawlers.
The Governor particularly expressed his desire to recruit skilled professionals, especially medical doctors from Bangladesh.
The foreign minister invited the Governor to visit Bangladesh with a business delegation, which he 'cordially accepted', according to the statement by the ministry.
