Braunschweig launches probes into VW emissions scandal
Prosecutors in Braunschweig have launched at least two criminal investigations into emissions scandal, including whether former Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn knew of the fraud.
The prosecutors are probing the conduct of several other senior VW managers in relation to the question of should investors have been told sooner about the affair.
It has also never been adequately explained why former VW patriarch Ferdinand Piëch battled with the VW supervisory board in April 2015, leading to his resignation as chairman.
Mr Piëch, who turns 80 on Monday, is the grandson of VW Beetle designer Ferdinand Porsche and is the person most responsible for transforming the company into the world’s largest carmaker.
