Apple joins race for defining future of driverless transportation
Apple has received a permit for testing autonomous vehicles in California, according to a global media report.
This marks the formal launch of the company’s race with the likes of Uber, Alphabet and Tesla to define the future of driverless transportation, the report added.
Besides Apple, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) granted such testing permits for autonomous vehicles, underpinning self-driving cars, to auto makers such as Volkswagen, Ford and General Motors, it said.
Furthermore, the suppliers, including Delphi and Bosch and start-ups such as Zoox, Drive.ai and Plus.ai, the report added, have received similar test permits from the DMV.
Apple is the 30th company to receive a testing permit for autonomous vehicles.
Abandoning near-term efforts to build an electric vehicle several months ago, Apple refocused development work on creating the autonomous vehicle systems, it said.
