Cotton production exceeds target in five districts
BOGRA, Apr 13: The cotton cultivators of Bogra region are delighted as they achieve the production target set by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for the current season.
The DAE sources said farmers have brought 1,770 hectares of land under cotton farming with an expectation to produce 4,500 tonnes of output. They got a bumper production and over 4,660 tonnes of yield have been achieved.
Growers of Bogra, Pabna, Sirajganj, Naogaon and Joypurhat have been getting repeated bumper production and good market price in recent years, said district cotton development officer Mostafa Kamal.
He further said a good number of cultivators of the region have become self-reliant by growing cotton.
Present market of the crop is also satisfactory. Per maund of cotton is being at Tk Tk 2,250 to Tk 2300 in the local market. It was Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,050 last year, said a DAE official.
The department provided quality seeds, fertilisers, insecticide and pesticide to the farmers under an incentive programme to encourage them to bring more lands under the farming of the crop, he added.
Farmer Shamsul Alam of Joypurhat said he had made a profit of Tk 24,000 from 0.40 acre of land last year. This season he brought 0.50 acre of land under the farming of CB-12 cotton variety and got 20 maunds of production. He is hopeful of making a satisfactory profit this year too.
Cotton development region office sources said they have set up 15 unit offices in different areas to purchase the crop directly from peasant at Tk 2,300 each maund.
