Bogra pumpkin cultivators expect fair market prices
BOGRA, Mar 20: The pumpkin farmers and officials concerned are much optimistic of getting good yield and fair market prices this season in the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials have provided measure of agri-input among the growers of the vast char area of Bangalee, Nagore and Jamuna river basin, said Rafiqul Islam, a farmer of Talshon village under Adamdighi upazila.
While visiting, this correspondent found that the growing process is predicting a bumper production of the vegetable. The harvest will begin next month if the weather condition remains favourable.
DAE urges the growers for adopting the latest technologies to make the cultivation programme successful.
The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has provided quality seed to the cultivators at nominal rate. The corporation also arranges training courses on the farming process of pumpkin on barren land.
"I have brought two bighas of land under pumpkin cultivation this season spending Tk 6,700", said Aminul Rahman, farmer of Shibgonj upazila.
He said, "Repeated bumper production and satisfactory market prices encourage the poor growers to bring more lands under the farming of pumpkin."
Kamrul Islam, another grower of Dakaher village said, he is growing pumpkin in 23 decimals of land and hopes to make a profit of Tk 6,800.
The district DAE said some 430 hectares of land been brought under pumpkin cultivation this season. Cultivation of the vegetable is profitable due to its high demand and fair market prices.
