BINA-4 groundnut cultivation gaining popularity among Gopalganj farmers
GOPALGANJ, Mar 16: Cultivation of BINA-4 groundnut is gaining popularity among the farmers of two unions - Korpara and Bioltali - under Sadar upazila in the district.
Sulekha Bala, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Bongram Block said BINA-4 groundnut is being cultivated vastly instead of the local ones this season considering its high profit. The official said this variety ensures high output and can be harvested within a short period of time.
Md Sefaur Rahman, scientific officer and officer-in-charge, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) sub-station, Gopinathpur said a total of 37 bighas of land have been brought under BINA-4 Groundnut farming in the two unions.
He said the production cost of the variety is much lower. A farmer can produce 10 maunds of output in one bigha of land spending Tk 10,000. It can be harvested within 120 to 130 days.
Present market price of the peanuts is Tk 32,000 per maund.
Mr Rahman urged the farmers to grow BINA-4 groundnut in more lands as soil and weather are favourable for its cultivation.
Harichand Rango (45), of village Kongsur in Korpara union said he expects to get 10 maunds of peanut from his 38 decimals of land this season. He is cultivating BINA-4 spending Tk 10,000, The grower expressed the hope of getting a profit of Tk 32,000.
