BOGRA, Mar 14: Khira (cucumber) growers of the district are making good profit this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Khira is cultivated in about 500 hectares of land in Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Shibgonj, Gab-toly, Sariakandi, Shon-atola, Nandugram, Sherpur, Dhunot, Shaza-hanpur and Sadar upazilas.

Mohsin Ali, a farmer of Kahaloo upazila, said short duration Khira farming is gaining popularity in the region considering its economic benefit.

"I have brought over 0.56 acre of land under Khira cultivation this season spending Tk 23,000. I've started harvesting the vegetable and earned Tk 30000 already", said farmer Mobarrak Hossain of Shibganj upazila. He said, "The rest of the crops will be sold at Tk 40,000 if the price remains stable."

Saiful Islam, a wholesaler of Dupchanchia kitchen market, said the retail price of each maund of high quality Khira is Tk 800 to Tk 900 while the wholesale price is at Tk 700 to Tk 780.

The DAE officials said the farmers of the district will bring more land under Khira cultivation in the upcoming seasons due to high production rate and market demand. The department provides all necessary support to the cultivators to make the Khira farming programme successful.
