Eight fishermen held with huge current net in Chandpur

Naval police arrested eight fishermen and seized 45,000 meters of current net along with five kg Jatka (hilsa fry) and three boats in a raid on the Meghna River in Sadar upazila of Chandpur district on Friday.

Sources said, a mobile court sentenced three among the arrestees to one year imprisonment and fined another three to Tk 1,000 each, according to UNB report.

Abhishek Das, upazila land officer and executive magistrate, led the mobile court.

He sentenced Md Shafik Khan, 18, Md Shohag, 18, Shahjalal, 20-- to one year imprisonment.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chandpur naval outpost, said the seized current net was burnt in front of the district fisheries officer.

The jatka was distributed among the orphanage, the poor and madrasas, said the officer-in-charge.
