Is Trump an interloper in the White House?

Syed Mahbubur Rashid
The Economist in its February 04 issue has dubbed the U.S President Donald Trump an insurgent in the White House and expressed concern about the future of not only the U.S.A but also of the world. According to the Economist, without active American support and participation the machinery of global co-operation could well fail. The world trade organisation (WTO) would not be worthy of its name. The UN would fall into disuse as well, though it remains to be questioned whether the U.N was in the proper use so long?

No doubt the USA, as a super power that it has been for long, was party to many a mischief that caused much of the instability in many parts of the globe.  In 1971, the President of the U.S.A did not support the elected representatives of East Pakistan. He took side with the army General who usurped power. President George Bush had the premonition that Iraq was holding massive weapons for mass destruction. He did not care the world view and the U.N could not dissuade him. He attacked and destroyed Iraq, the seat of one of the oldest civilisations of the world. Iraq belongs to the region known as Levant comprising Syria, Lebanon, North Iraq, Palestine. In the history of human civilization, the earliest evidence of farming, herding and the domestication of animals comes from this region. Iraq's ruler Saddam Hossain was tried and hanged by the 'democratic' government of Iraq installed by Bush on the Eid day, the greatest religious festival of the Muslims. Till the fall of the Soviet block, the U.S.A did not hesitate to pull down the government any country, if it could trace its link with the Soviet block. After the fall of the Soviet Union, known to the west as the land of the iron curtain or house of Satan, the U.S.A became active in bringing regime changes with a view to restoring democracy in Syria Libya and Egypt. The result was disastrous.

The U.S.A is undoubtedly the most powerful country in the world both economically and militarily. It leads the world in the way it thinks proper. Of course, up till 1991, the Soviet Union was the disturbing element. From then on, it has been the sole and absolute leader of the world. Now, it is a matter of concern for all of us to see the present President Trump riding on his wild whims and capricious designs, something that might be even more threatening than his predecessors.  Another evil sign is the rise of Russian under Putin. China is already a challenge. It may overtake the U.S.A as the number one economy within a few years. However, it is alleged that the western press in particular and the world press in general has been continually indicting Trump either for this reason or that because Trump hinted for making rapprochement with Putin.

The Economist in its issue dated Feb 27, 2016 depicted a clear picture as to what type of man Trump is :'The things Mr. Trump has said in this campaign make him unworthy of leading one of the world great political parties, let alone America." Because each additional Trumping seems a bit more shocking than the one before. To recap, he has referred to Mexicans crossing the border as rapists, called enthusiastically for the use of torture, hinted that Antony Scalia, a Supreme Court justice, was murdered, proposed banning all Muslims from visiting America, advocated killing the families of terrorists, and repeated approvingly, a damaging fiction that a century ago American soldiers in the Philippines dipped their ammunition in pigs blood before executing Muslim rebels. At a recent rally, he said he would like to punch a protester in the face.

Having such ignominious credentials it is indeed strange that he succeeded to get the nomination of Republican party. In spite of securing less popular votes he has been elected due to the magic of electoral college. Earlier this happened four occasions. Andrew Jackson (1824), Samuel J. Tilden (1976), Grove Cleveland (1888) and Al Gore (2000), all won the popular votes, but failed to receive a majority in the electoral college. In the Electoral College the dictum the winner takes is averse to the democratic norm and ideal. Ideally, democratic rule means the consent of the majority which is totally frustrated by this Electoral College method of the U.S election system. It has been alleged that Russia hacked the U.S election. The allegation has been up to such a point that Trump could not have been elected without  Putin's interference and assistance.

The U.S.A is the absolute owner of super technology. Then how Russia, with less perfection and skill could overrun the U.S technology? We, the common people fail to understand this riddle. F.B.I, however independent and autonomous it may be, is a government agency. It could not act in a manner which might interfere and cause damage to the election at the highest level. Time has come that the entire election process should be reviewed. Something is wrong with the political party also. Otherwise, how can political novices obtain nomination from a long traditional and historical party like the Republican Party. It is boastfully claimed that there are checks and balances among the executive judiciary and legislature in the U.S constitution. Maybe it is there, but it is believed that the President of the U.S.A is the most powerful executive in the world. Donald Trump has been continually under the vigilance of the media both print and electronic. We hope with the passage of time he will be more political and shun caprice and whims.
