Bogra cultivators using mobile threshers to winnow paddy
BOGRA, Dec 1: Farmers of the district have started using mobile threshers to winnow paddy in the current T-Aman season instead of the primeval system.
Sources said many farm labourers have become jobless here due to abundantly use of mobile threshers, but, the growers are happy as it helps reduce their production cost.
"We can save time and money by using threshers and the grains can also be safe from getting damaged", said Abdul Awal, a farmer of Shukhanpuke village under Gabtoli Upazila.
Saiful Islam (38), another farmer of Amhjupi village said he spent Tk 1,200 for threshing the paddy produced in three bighas of land by a mobile paddy thresher. "But it would cost Tk 1600 to Tk 1700 if farm labourers did the same", he added.
This thresher winnow process is simple and the operators of the threshers offer their service by going to the farmers' doors, he added.
Mahir Uddin (48), a day labourer of Gunaher village under Dupchanchia Upazila, said, "Many farm labourers like me are jobless now. Farmers do not hire us. We are suffering from financial hardship during the peak season."
Kamrul Hossain, 24, owner of a mobile paddy thresher in Kahaloo Upazila, said it needs only one hour to thresh paddy of one bigha of land, whereas two labourers need one day to do the same. Two litres of diesel are needed for running the machine for one hour, he said, adding that there are eight machines being used simultaneously in his village.
