PABNA, Dec 1: Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Pabna, has taken an extensive programme to cultivate different varieties of vegetable in the nine upazilas of the district during winter. Under the programme, a total of 46,715 hectares of land have been brought under vegetable cultivation with a production target of 8,70,835 tonnes.
According to DAE, a total of 2,755 hectares of land has been brought under vegetable cultivation in Sadar with a production target of 51,518 tonnes, 1,055 hectares in Atghoria to get 19,730 tonnes, 410 hectares in Chatmohar to achieve 7,860 tonnes, 1,190 hectares in Bhangura with a production target of 22,253 tonnes, 855 hectares in Faridpur to get an output of 15,988 tonnes, 370 hectares in Bera to produce 6,919 tonnes, 5,190 hectares in Sujanagar with a production target of 97,053 tonnes, 680 hectares in Santhia with an output target of 12,716 tonnes and 4,200 hectares in Ishwardi with a production target of 78,540 tonnes.
Local sources said many people of the area show their interest in farming vegetable as it more profitable than other crops.
Deputy Director of DAE Bibhuti Bhuson Sarkar said the department ensures that the growers get the required fertiliser, seeds, pesticides and other inputs to boost the production.
Earlier, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) and other commercial banks provided agriculture loan to the growers on easy terms for the purpose, he added.
Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers have already been appointed in each of the nine upazilas to supervise the programme and make it a success.
