Distribution of nutrient-rich rice among vulnerable women in Sylhet div begins
SYLHET, Dec 1: A programme for supplying nutrient-mixed rice among over 3,600 vulnerable women in three selected upazilas of Sylhet division has been started. It would begin in full swing from January 2017, a senior official informed yesterday.
The World Food Programme (WFP) had assisted the venture with a view to raising the nutrition intake of the poor women in selected areas, he said and added, initially it is being launched in 13 selected upazilas countrywide and it would be extended in other areas in future.
The listed recipients include 1545 women under the Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) programme in the 13 unions of Chhatak Upazila, 1607 in nine unions of Doarabazar Upazila in Sunamganj and 900 in nine unions of Gowainghat Upazila in Sylhet, informed divisional Regional Controller of Food Md Anisuzzaman. These areas are considered as poverty-stricken and the low income group people suffer from nutrition problem.
The food department through bidding has already appointed a rice mill in Sylhet for fortifying the nutrient with rice before supplying it to the beneficiaries, he said. Already they had supplied some rice.
Only the listed VGD women groups are the rice recipients, the official informed and further it would be spread in the other areas in future.
