Hectic farming of maize going on in six upazilas of Nilphamari
NILPHAMARI, Dec 1: Maize cultivation is going on in full swing in six upazilas of the district particularly in the Char areas. Thousands of Char people are coming out of poverty trap by cultivating the crop.
Sources said the grain was cultivated in 5,750 hectares of land last year and this year the target is 6458 hectares of land to produce 46822 tonnes. Some NGOs encourage the farmers providing high yielding seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other necessary inputs to the poor Char dwellers to grow the crop.
Maize cultivation is profitable as 30 to 40 maunds of output can be possible from per bigha (30 decimal) of land. The production cost of the grain is also low as the land does not need to plough so extensively. It needs minimum irrigation and weeding.
Abu Bakar, a poor resident of a char area under Jaldhaka Upazila, said he cultivated two bighas of land under maize farming and expects to get 60 maunds of the crop.
