Some failed to file tax return as deadline expired at midnight
Although income tax return submission timeline ended on Wednesday midnight, taxpayers were seen crowding tax offices around Dhaka city after the deadline had expired.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) organised income tax return week across the country from November 24 to November 30.
The NBR also observed Income Tax Day on Wednesday (November 30).
On Wednesday, tax offices around the city were heavily crowded.
Long queues were also seen the day before.
Many taxpayers were seen filling out their forms on the stairs in a last-minute rush to meet the deadline.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Bank had ordered all bank branches to remain open until 8pm to help taxpayers.
Each tax office had set up several booths where taxpayers could pick up forms, submit them and receive a receipt acknowledging the submission. Help desks had also been set up for those having difficulty filling out the forms.
As the NBR announced that the deadline to submit income tax would not be extended further, those who failed to file their return within Wednesday evening, rushed to the tax offices near their respective localities with the aim to submit the same before midnight.
However, some of them returned home without being able to even complete formalities to file tax return before 12 o’clock, according to a news agency. – bz
