Stop building work occupying city canal: HC
Bangladesh’s High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to stop in 48 hours the construction work on a 17-storey shopping mall occupying a canal by the Agargaon-Shyamoli Link Road in Dhaka.
An HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the order following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) president Advocate Manzill Murshid.
The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the inaction of the administration to protect the canal should not be declared illegal.
It also wanted to why directives should not be given to pull down the under-construction building at the cost of Mamata Cooperatives Society.
Director General of the Department of Environment (DoE), Managing Director of Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority, Chief Engineer and Executive Engineer of Public Works Department and officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
Manzill Murshid filed the petition attaching a report published in a local newspaper on November 2, 2016, on the issue, according to a news agency. – bz
