International research competition
Creating better financial analysts
Rad Sharar Bin Kamal
Benjamin Franklin, one of the greatest leaders of all time, rightly put the importance of sophistication in analysis by his famous statement, "Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship." With the goal to produce better analysts for the financial services industry, CFA Society Bangladesh launched the global competition 'CFA Institute Research Challenge' for the first time this year. This is a global competition that tests the equity research and valuation, investment report writing and presentation skills of university students. This annual educational initiative promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.
Team Stratocasters from the IBA, University of Dhaka and team Silence of the Lambdas from the Department of Finance, Faculty of Business Studies (FBS), University of Dhaka won the champion and runner-up titles in the local final round of the highly regarded competition on 26 November, 2016 in a local hotel. The mission of CFA Institute is to lead the investment profession globally by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for the ultimate benefit of society. The Research Challenge aims to extend this mission to students by teaching best practices in investments at the earliest point in one's career.
The CFA Society Bangladesh is the local host of this competition whereby the society volunteers worked in conjunction with participating local universities to assemble teams of 3-5 business and finance students. Each team worked directly with a professional mentor to do research and prepare an equity research report on a publicly traded company. This year the subject company was Grameenphone Limited. The findings of each team findings were locally evaluated by high-profile panels of heads of research, portfolio managers and chief investment officers from the top firms of the investment management industry in Bangladesh. Local champions from Bangladesh will advance to regional competitions in the Asia Pacific in March, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ninety three teams registered for the screening round this year from 23 universities across the country of which 10 teams from 6 universities were selected for the written equity research round. Six teams from this pool made it to the local finale where they presented their previously submitted equity notes in front of a panel of high-profile investment management professionals.
Dhaka Stock Exchange Managing Director K A M Majedur Rahman, IDLC Finance Group Managing Director and CEO Arif Khan, CFA Institute Head of Education of Asia Pacific Countries Neil Govier, Chairman of Asian Tiger Capital Partners Group Ifty Islam and other dignitaries handed over the prizes among the winning teams. The first-ever CFA Institute Research Challenge in Bangladesh was sponsored by LankaBangla Securities Limited and BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage Limited.
