Dhaka seeks global fund to empower women

FE Report

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki has called upon the international community to create a global fund for economic empowerment of women.

She made the call while speaking at a forum of the second High Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) in Nairobi on Monday.  A high-level delegation from Bangladesh, led by State Minister for Finance M A Mannan, is taking part in the four-day meeting.

Other members of the delegation include Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Member pf the Planning Commission Professor Dr. Shamsul Alam, ERD Additional Secretary Monowar Ahmed and  Director General of the Department of Women Affairs Shaheen Ahmed Chowdhury.

Bangladesh is a member of the GPEDC Steering Committee.  The State Minister in her speech said women are playing a leading role in the economic development of Bangladesh. She mentioned that around three million women are working in the readymade garments industry, the biggest foreign exchange-earning sector of the country.

She also said the government is implementing an inclusive development model to ensure welfare and progress of all segments of the society including women and youth.

Mentioning that on many occasions, women are subjected to informal discrimination, she urged everyone to help eradicate such practice.
