NILPHAMARI, Nov 29: Growers are making hefty profit and some of them are becoming economically solvent by cultivating the early variety of potato this season.

Sources said the potato has brought remarkable change in the socio-economic condition of thousands of marginal farmers of the district.

The farmers are now harvesting the crop who cultivated those in the first week of the Bengali month 'Ashwin'. At present per kg of newly-harvested potato is being sold at Tk 70 in the local kitchen markets.

Sources said the production of early-harvested potato is generally low than that of the seasonal ones. Around 40 to 45 maunds of production come from a bigha (30 decimal) of land.

Sirajul Islam, a farmer of Itakhola Union under Sadar Upazila, said he cultivated potato in one bigha of land. He said his total output of the crop was 35 maunds which he sold at a total price of Tk 80,000, while his cultivation cost was Tk 12,000.

Sources said this potato variety needs high land where rain water does not remain stagnant and in case of excessive rain process of drain out the water must be there.

For the last few years the farmers are utilising the high lands in growing the potato which is becoming very lucrative gradually.

Abdur Rahman, a farm labour of Gomnati union under Domar Upazila, said he contracted 20 decimal of high land from his neighbour at Tk 2,000 and started cultivating early variety of potato there from the first week of Ashwin. He said he harvested the crop few days ago and got 25 maunds of production spending Tk 15,000. He said he sold those at Tk 60,000.
