SYLHET, Nov 27: Winter vegetable is being cultivated on 18,500 hectares of land in Sylhet division this year. Farmers are cultivating gourd, sweet gourd, radish, bean, tomato, cucumber, different leafy vegetables, potato, pumpkin, cauliflour, brinjal and others on a vast tract of land.
Some poor and marginal farmers are being given incentive in the form of seed and fertilisers this season.
New areas like Lamakazi, Tukerbazar, Kamalbazar, Lalabazar and Rakhalganj of Sylhet Sadar Upazila, Dakshinbhag, Dhakadakshin, Nimadol, Kotalpur, Lakshmipasha, Bagha of Golapganj Upazila and massive lands of Dakshin Surma Upazila have been brought under vegetable farming in recent years, said Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet, Md Abul Hashim.
Besides, farmers in many areas of Biswanath and Kanaighat upazilas are also involved in vegetable cultivation on commercial basis, he added.
Director of DAE, Sylhet, Krishna Chandra Hore said the farmers in this region had almost no interest in vegetable farming years ago. But, the trend is totally reversed now. Vegetable is now being cultivated in more lands in the region, he said, adding, the department always supports the growers in this regard.
Within a year or two, most of the arable lands in the region would be brought under farming, he said.
The DAE has already taken up a comprehensive programme to achieve the goal, he added.
