Two die in clash with cops in Mymensingh
Two people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash with law enforcers during a demonstration seeking nationalisation of Fulbaria Degree College of Mymensingh.
The victims were identified as Abul Kalam Azad, a teacher of Botany Department of the college and Safar Ali, 70, a passerby.
Witnesses said teachers and students of Fulbaria Degree College brought out a procession in front of their college demanding its nationalisation.
At one stage, police charged baton to disperse them, triggering a clash that left 21 people injured.
Safar Ali, an octogenarian man who was passing through the area, died on the spot during the clash.
The injured were taken to a private community hospital where Abul Kalam succumbed to his injuries, said Prof SM Abul Hashem, a teacher of the college and convenor of Fulbaria Degree College Movement Committee.
Denying the allegation police claimed that the pedestrian died of cardiac arrest.
Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge of Fulbaria Police Station, said the protesters threw brick-chips at police during the clash and police charged baton to disperse them.
