CU students go on strike seeking justice for Diaz
A section of students of Chittagong University (CU) went on an indefinite strike on Sunday demanding justice over the death of BCL leader Irfan Chowdhury Diaz.
They demanded immediate arrest of the accused in the case filed over the death.
The agitated students brought out processions on the campus premises, vandalised two/three CNG-run auto rickshaws and damaged a portion of the shuttle train, snapping the train communication from Sholoshohor in the city to CU, reports UNB.
Following the protests on the campus, the university authorities deployed police to control the situation, said CU Assistant Proctor M Helaluddin.
They also demanded withdrawal of the Proctor of the university and conducting re-autopsy of Diaz’s body.
Diaz, assistant secretary of the central BCL committee, was found hanged from a ceiling fan at his residence in Hathazari upazila on the night of November 20.
Police received the autopsy report of Diaz on Wednesday which mentioned that the BCL leader Diaz took his own life by hanging himself.
Following the incident, Diaz’s mother Jaheda Amin Chowdhury filed the case against 10 named people, including CU assistant proctor Anwar Hossain, and eight unidentified people with the court of Chittagong senior Judicial Magistrate Shiblu Kumar Dey on November 24.
CU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League president Alamgir Tipu, its former general secretary Jamshedul Alam Chowdhury, and its publicity secretary Rashedul Alam Jisan were among the accused. –RH
