SYLHET, Nov 24: The country's north-eastern Sylhet division is going to be declared 'child marriage free' region very soon.

Extensive campaign by some social organisations, and non governmental organisations alongside some government departments have contributed much to this effect, said a number of senior officials and elected representatives.

The upazila level officials, especially the UNOs, Social welfare officers and the education officiers have been directly involved with the issue, which had already contributed much, especially to adolescent girls and their families.

A comprehensive and mass campaign among students and the rural folk about the demerits of child marriage has been going on in all the 39 upazilas of four districts. Due to the success, we got news of cancellation of child marriages from some remote areas like Tahirpur, Jogonnathpur, Fenchuganj and Jakiganj upazilas in recent weeks, informed the Divisional Commissioner Md. Jamal Uddin Ahmed. These caused an impact on the neighbouring areas too, he added.

Just on getting information, the UNO, along with law enforcers and local elected persons like union parishad chairamen and members move to the village concerned and stop child marriage incidents, he added. Even in some cases, the feast was held, but the marriage had to be cancelled, the senior official said adding the mediators and instigators were fined by mobile courts for instigating such unlawful arrangement.

Talking to this correspondent, the divisional commissioner said a grand rally will be held at the divisional city to announce the region as 'child marriage free' in December. However, Moulvibazar district was declared child marriage free on September 7, Habiganj on October 30  and Sylhet on November 8  while Sunamganj had also been working well and they would make it soon, he added.
