Crop harvested in absence of Santals
Rangpur Sugar Mill authorities started to reap paddy sown by Santals on a disputed piece of land in Baghda farm under Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha district on Thursday.
The move follows an order by the High Court which told mill officials in Gobindganj Upazila to make sure the Santals get their crop. But no member of the tribal community was present when their crop was being gathered on Thursday
The harvesting started in the morning amid police protection in presence of district administration and mill officials and workers leaders.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdul Hannan said the mill authorities will hand over the paddy to the Santal people after the full harvesting from the lands.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said the mill authorities harvested the paddy according to the HC order and they are assisting them in the work, according to a news agency. - IH
