SYLHET, Nov 23: Many farmers of Sylhet region have started cultivating non-traditional crops considering the high market prices.

During this year's winter season the farming would go up as the farmers in four districts of the division are preparing for the diverse agriculture, sources said.

The farmers are now found much more involved in raising the cultivation of the different non-traditional crops, said Md Abul Hashim, deputy director of DEA, Sylhet district office. "The department is also providing more technical and consultation support to the farmers. Besides, BADC supplies seeds of high yielding varieties", he added.

Crops like turmeric, lentil, khesari, pea, linseed, sugarcane, onion, ginger, chilli, cinnamon, gram, mung, arhar, black gram, motor, French bean, ginger and potato are expected to be cultivated on about 15,000 hectares of land this season.

Abdus Sabur Sujam, an award winning farmer of village Mollargaon of Dakshin Surma Upazila, said many farmers are getting involved with non- traditional crops cultivation because of high profit.

Besides, mechanised irrigation system is also encouraging the cultivators toward diversified crops' farming, he said, adding, "Through organising village-level farmer groups, we also provide training with the help of agriculture officials."

"Once we couldn't think of farming any non-traditional crop in the past", said another veteran farmer Abdul Hasib of village Baushi in Golapganj Upazila. "Now French bean, turmeric or maize are being cultivated on a large scale. Many of the farmers are cultivating those crops on commercial purposes", he added.
