CHITTAGONG, Nov 22: Shop owners under the banner of Chittagong Metropolitan Shop Owners Association observed a six-hour strike on Tuesday in protest against enhancement of the package VAT on shops.

Most of the shops in different markets of the port city remained closed during the strike from 6:00 am to 12:00 noon.

The shop owners also formed a human chain for an hour on Jubilee Road near Biponi Bitan (New Market) under Kotwali police station in the city.

The leaders of the association said the government has doubled the package VAT (Value Added Tax) on each shop from Tk 14,000 to Tk 28,000. But they cannot afford to pay it, the leaders said, adding that the amount should be Tk 14,000.

The leaders also said they would launch tougher movement if their demand is not met immediately. The Chittagong Metropolitan Shop Owners Association on Monday night took decision to observe the strike.
