RANGPUR, Nov 22 (BSS): Agriculture experts at a farmers' field day have called for popularising cultivation of flood tolerant rice to attain sustainable food security by increasing rice production amid changing climate.

They made the call at the event organised by RDRS Bangladesh in the paddy fields of farmers Asharf Ali and Mohammad Nader at village Kalamati under Khuniagachh union of Sadar upazila in Lalmonirhat on Monday afternoon, a press release said.

The farmers harvested flood tolerant BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12 rice and local variety 'Madhubas' rice on the occasion.

RDRS Bangladesh assisted 130 farmers of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila to expand cultivation of these rice varieties with support of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) under the Stress Tolerant Rice for South Asia and Africa (IRRI-STRASA) project.

Deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Bidhu Bhushan Roy attended the event as chief guest with programme manager (field coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh for Lalmonirhat Abu Sadat Md Maidul Islam in the chair.

While narrating experience in cultivating flood tolerant BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BINA dhan11 and BINA dhan12 rice varieties, farmer Ashraf Ali said he cultivated each of these rice varieties on his one bigha of land and got excellent yield.

Farmer Anwarul Islam and Nader also shared their experience in cultivating these four flood tolerant rice varieties having submergence tolerant capacities for over two weeks to get better yield than local 'Madhubas' variety rice.

Lauding the initiative of RDRS Bangladesh in popularising cultivation of flood tolerant rice, the chief guest predicted brighter prospect to overcome huge crop losses being caused by floods through expanded farming of these rice varieties in the country.
